GM Baos,
Today we will be covering everything that's been hiding in my Twitter bookmarks for the past few days.
This week's bite-sized news 🥟
Ledger Recover backlash
Crypto twitter is freaking out with concerns over Ledger's new feature Ledger Recover. This ID- based recovery service will backup your private key for $9.99 a month. After providing your passport or ID card, Ledger Recover splits the private key into three fragments, sharing each with a different third party.
Why is most of the community concerned? There are worries about Ledger potentially extracting private keys, governments requesting private keys from third parties, third parties going rogue, and how this goes against the fundamentals of crypto.
Yesterday I freaked out about the revelation that @Ledger could spit out your private key with a firmware update.
Yet I noticed the smartest people were not freaking out. Was I missing something?
I spent the evening educating myself, and now I'm in the "nvm it's fine" camp.

In the past 48 hours, Ledger has addressed the top questions raised by the community. They have emphasized that this is not a backdoor and that the update is 100% opt-in. Recovering your secret phrase will not be as simple as someone stealing your ID.
Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko isn't worried about Ledger's update. He says, "if you trusted them before not to exfiltrate your keys, you can trust them now not to do it when that feature is off."
What are your thoughts on the recent Ledger news? 🧐
@rajgokal@Ledger@Trezor@solanamobile Attack surface is basically the same with or without the update. Imho ledger is just as good as before for cold storage
