Remember GameStop?

The speccy stock pumped by Reddit’s infamous r/WallStreetBets that forced RobinHood to freeze trading and almost defaulted them?

Yep, that one. And now they’ve made it very clear where the business is heading next. GameStop aims to become the go-to NFT marketplace for trading in-game assets.

It was an interesting launch because they:

• fired a bunch of people beforehand, including their CFO

• had $1mn volume in their first 24 hours of trading while Coinbase did around $210K in their first week (though we don’t know how many users they allowed in their beta)

• have one project, MetaBoy, leading the charge driving about 25% of trading volume

• have a big audience of gamers – who haven’t shown a lot of love towards NFTs XD

There are some mixed reviews on the quality of projects and art on the platform but hey – they’ve made about $45K revenue since launch.

Pretty good for a first launch, but a drop in the bucket for GameStop’s typical $16.5mn day 😂

A brand new contract standard has just been approved. The ERC-4907 allows you pay to rent a NFT to temporarily unlock its benefits!

Why rent a NFT?

Let’s say Lili owns a Doodle and her friend Keane, who doesn’t own a Doodle 🤪, wants to attend their event at NFT NYC. Today, Lili could:

• Sign up on behalf of Keane, or

• transfer him the NFT and trust he’ll send it back.

With the new ERC-4907 standard, Lili can now rent Keane her Doodle for a fee (KEKW). Keane can only hold it temporarily, he is unable to sell or transfer.

Other NFT renting applications include play-to-earn NFT rentals, renting membership for token-gated clubs or software.
