This founder lost $4m in USDC...

Another day, another hack.

Have you heard about Webaverse? Apparently their founder was hacked. Ahad Shams (the co- founder) put out a 4 page statement on the theft. He claims $4m was stolen from a newly created Trust Wallet without the private key or being connected to public Wi-Fi.

TLDR to this insane hack ⬇️

• Ahad Shams and his colleague flew to Rome to meet with "Mr Safra" - the same person who collected their IDs, insisted it was important they meet IRL, and asked for proof of funds. He was supposed to be the last investor in their round.

• Even though they knew it felt a bit scammy, they created a new Trust Wallet at home and planned to transfer the $4m during the meeting with "Mr Safra" and his "banker".

• The reason "Mr Safra" asked for Trust Wallet was because he claimed he only had a basic understanding of crypto and didn't understand hardware wallets

• During their meeting, "Mr Safra" asked to take a picture of the Trust Wallet funds, walked out of the room to "discuss the next steps", then suddenly all the USDC was gone 🤯

Eowyn Chen (the Trust Wallet CEO) says they have high confidence the theft was NOT caused by Trust Wallet, but likely was an organized crime. What are your thoughts? 🧐

We waited all weekend just to find out the whole "Monday 👀" thing was an experiment in social coordination.

Then Tuesday came around and DeFi protocols started sharing each others tweets as part of a campaign to promote the permissionless nature of web3. And remind us of why this space is different. "We bump fists, because we're in this together".
